German Braided Sweet Bread – Hefezopf
This recipe will help you make the perfect Hefezopf every time. It is super easy and super delicious! It is also know as Braided Bread, Yeast Bread or German Sweet Bread.This German Sweet Bread or Hefezopf is best with a glass of milk.

- Mixing Bowl
- stand mixer
- measuring cups
Ingredients
- 4 cups all purpose flour bread flour can be used as well
- 1 1/2 tbsp yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar granulated
- 1/2 stick butter soft
- 1 egg
- pinch salt
- 1 cup warm milk
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tbsp milk
- almond slices
- Pear Sugar or Hagelzucker
Instructions
- add flour in mixing bowl. Make a little well and pour yeast in it. Mix with 3 tablespoons of warm milk and let sit for 5 min.
- when yeast is bubbly add sugar, butter, egg, salt and milk
- mix in stand mixer for about 5 min
- form dough into a ball and cover with kitchen towel. Let stand on a warm place for about 45 min to 1 hour. Dough should be double in size
- cut dough in 3 equal parts and roll it into long rolls. Then fold into a braid.
- put braided bread on baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Cover bread with kitchen towel for 30 min
- pre-heat oven to 350°F
- take the egg yolk and mix it with 2 tbsp of milk. Take a brush and gently brush egg mixture on dough
- sprinkle the top with almond slices and pearl sugar
